RAC say you must carry a spare wheel |
Lead | ||
|
I was tidying up and found a slip sent to me by the RAC stating "Important Changes to Your Terms of Membership", and they say they will not cover
costs as a result of failing to carry a spare tyre and wheel (no caveats, no get-out clause). Apart from the difficulty this will cause me on my Ducati, when I
bought the Marcos I was told that the Mantula does not carry a spare wheel, though I have always thought the shape of the boot floor suggests that it was at
least considered you could lay one in there (measurement seems to confirm this).

I thought Mantulas had them fitted in the nose, there's certainly room for a 'spacesaver'

My Mantula Spyder came with one in the boot, covered with a shaped and carpeted piece of hardboard, it looked like it belonged so I assume this was standard.
Mind you, took it out about 4 years ago as it used to jump every time I went over speed humps ! |

As martineztop says, Ive also seen pics of mantulas with the spare fitted in the nose of the bonnet. There was a spacesaver spare in the boot of mine although
flat and the wheelbrace didnt fit the nuts I got home no problems. Have put the spare off *@+ in while I sort it,looks like some of the sealant stuff had been
used in it ,what a mess. I would think the boot was the better place for it considering the weight bias.
Regarding the RAC specifying you have to carry a spare, must be something they have come up with and I personally would look at what other providers offer. I know the esprit gt3 was never produced with a spare wheel. My bike recovery would get me home with a puncture. sandyv8 sorry didnt know I was swearing. |

Spare in the boot | #4 | ||

I have whipped a wheel off and it fits OK in the boot - I suppose you have answered the next question - which is how is it held down (NOT). It rather eats into
the limited space. There is no sign of any provision in the nose.
I suppose all this is academic - I only have 4 wheels anyway. Unless the original Revolution wheels are still available. Steve

Hi, the Mantula´s had a spare wheel in the boot. Never saw a Mantula with the spare fitted under the bonnet. This was standard for the Mantara´s.
Main problem is, that I have different wheel sizes on front & rear axle so only a 50% chance that the spare wheel will fit. I took the spare wheel out of the boot and have since than 2 spray cans with repair foam for the wheels in the boot. Concerning the Revolution rims. As far as I know, Revolution does not exist any longer or went bust? I am searching 5-spoke 14" rims in 6.5 or 7 since 3 years now without success. I am looking for min. 2 for the rear axle so if someone has a set for sale allways interested. CF Mantula |

But what do I do now? Back wheels are different thicknesses to the front. etc. Guess I am going to have to invest in a skinny, or not bother.
P.S. I think the Mk2 Mantula's, the ones with a flaired arch at the front. (not the Martina's) had space savers in the front. I guess the Martinas could have had them also.

Perhaps it was optional for the late Mantula´s, but never did see one, as well the Martina´s I did see did not have the spare wheel under the bonnet. But as
mentioned, if you have different wheel sizes you need a 50/50 joker for the correct size of the spare wheel.

mm. have to say I'm unimpressed with RAC, some years ago I took out their recovery cover for my Classic Ducati, after being a member for 2 years I noticed
the small print restricted the service to bikes below a certain age, thereby disqualifying my bike ! thing is they had my registration details so knew my bikes
age. I've no time for incompetence RAC can go @$+ itself for all I care
hey your right %*# is a swearword on here |

My car came with a spare and a recess for it in the boot. It was the first thing to go and saved about 25kg!
I will check this with RAC and after being a loyal customer will dump them immediately as none of my cars carry spares. Thing is, do the AA provide this cover?? |

Spare Wheel | #11 | ||

Thing is alot of modern cars dont carry spare wheels, they either have a tube of foam or carry a small air compressor, two that come to mind are Merc SL55 and
a Astom Martin DB9!!!!!

I reckon this must have been written by some dimble-brain and sent out before anyone could think it through. I expect by now they have realised this is just
plain dumb. Besides the tread on my tyres is directional, so I would need two spares. The note coincides with the take over by Aviva (Norwich Union), so some
time ago, maybe its been revised since then.

Steve,
You should have a spare wheel; I sold the car to Jeremy Kearns with a 'space saver'. It was a bright orange rim with special wheel nuts and spacers. Paul |

Depending on your wheel stud spacing... If you have the ford spacing on all 4 wheels, then obviously a Ford space saver will fit (the one from a late 90's
Focus is the right diameter I think, or one from a Saab 900 (post 1988) also fits.

Hi Paul,
Jeremy told me they didn't carry spare wheel, but then he also told me it had a T45 gearbox ! I think I will resort to some instant tyre gloop and keep my fingers crossed. Steve
There's a lot of talk these days about green transport. Well, I am ahead of the game, I already have green transport ... British racing green.

Amended RAC rules | #16 | ||
|
I have found that the on-line RAC rules are different from the printed rules, they have added a caveat to the requirement for carrying a serviceable spare
wheel as follows :
Please Note : Motorised vehicles that are manufactured without the provision of a spare wheel will be considered on their individual merits.... So I suppose all you have to do is to persuade them that it wasn't manufactured with one. This at least means I have cover for a puncture on my motorbike! Steve

AA provide cover ok, i have them covering my Chevrolet Blazer, it originally came with a spare wheel underneith but this has been replaced by a under slung LPG
tank so no room for a spare, unless im going abroad when i have a wheel carrier that mounts to the roof bars but you can't really do that with a marcos???
CF Mantula Revolution are still in business ive only just bought 4 for myself i don't know whether they still produce the 5 spoke version however.. but Compomotive do a similar copy if i remember correctly... |
