Registered Member Posts: 13 Fri, 9-May-2008 16:01	Tags : None Hi, Need some tech help please, The axle on my Mantula (Atlas LSD) is in need of painting up and want to make it last. Rather that just attack it with a wire brush and a few coats of Hammerite for it to go rusty again in 6 months, i would prefer it shotblasted and powder coated. The local Powder coating Co near me say they can do it with the diff still inside the axle as long as i drain the oil (already done). My concern is the dust during the shot blasting may get inside and damage it and then the hot temperatures during the baking may again cause problems. Has anybody else gone through this process or removed the internals of a LSD diff so i can just hand over the outer axle case. Many thanks, Martyn. www.marcosmantula.com

Registered Member Posts: 1033 Fri, 9-May-2008 19:43 Chief mechanic	I don't think blasting is an option really for engine, gearbox or axle, too much risk of the media getting inside and buggering it up. The heat may not be such an issue as they can get very hot anyway, but one little bit of grit and it's all over. get yourself a selection of wire brushes and some rust treatment, then you could try a Chandlers for Epoxy based brushing paint, it's horrible stuff but seems to last well on ocean going boats. other than that, just list it as a job to do every few years. mines a mess too

Registered Member Posts: 843 Sat, 10-May-2008 00:28 Chief mechanic	You could protect areas that you dont want blasted with Gaffer tape but the heat required for powder coating will probably melt the oil seals. I agree, a 2 pack painted finish would be an option and any 2k paint could be brushed on if you wish.

Registered Member Posts: 56 Sat, 10-May-2008 08:11	on the 30 odd ive done and the 100's my father has done over the years we use Chassis black as it stays slightly soft and repairs itsself unlike hammerite that chips off, theres another good product that we use if we have no chassis black, Johnstones One Coat Non Drip Black Gloss - Seriousl it works mint....

Registered Member Posts: 14 Sat, 10-May-2008 14:43	Hi, Thanks for the prompt replies, they kinda reinforce the worries i had re potential damage and can't risk the expense of having to replace the unit. I still want to powder coat the axle to match the rest of the suspension parts to be done and therefore need to remove the internals. Has anybody out there done this on a Atlas LSD type, is it as easy as remove the half shafts and then the 4 bolts each side of the unit and pull the diff out or are there other things to worry about on reassembly. Registered Member Posts: 1420 Sun, 11-May-2008 20:55 Minor mechanic deity	Hi, dismanteling the Capri axle is not really a problem, but if you will put it together afterwards and adjust it 100% you need some special Ford tools. We did it in 2004 and it was not possible to buy the distance discs in the affordable size. Not in Germany, UK or USA. Did find these discs later in a company building electric engines. So it looks quite easy, but if the play in the rear axle is OK I would go and paint with chassis black. By the way I know some Mantula owners with temperature problems in the rear axle. The torque of the V8 seems to be much higher than the V6 engines. We checked the temperature driving on the Nürburgring and it was far too high, so a good advice given from DP was to use synthetic oil, the other one is to weld on the rear diff plate additional cooling ribs = used by Ford works Rallye cars. The problem area is with the the shimming and the 'Pre load setting' for the pinion which has a 'crush washer', you may need to take it to a specialist to get it right

Registered Member Posts: 60 Mon, 19-May-2008 11:09	My Atlas thats in my 3L V6 GT has just cost me £2200 to have a new one made... all you have to do is warm them up wrong and thats it bent once its bent you cannot get a good enough suspension alignment to make the car handle, i have had mine built with a new casing Brand new Gripper Differential with a 35 / 90 ramping angle to make it drivable on the race circuit. and its got a 3.7 CWP in it.. Its very expensive for a new CW & P set if you don't get the settings in the Axle EXACT it will act like a milling machine on the crown wheel and youl have a expensive bill for the sake f stripping it when there was no need. P.S on the back axle powder coating will be shot blasted off within a month... Chassis black is the way to go.... Give John or Tom a ring at Fostek in Cramlington... Registered Member Posts: 62 Sat, 24-May-2008 14:55	i entrust mine to them and mine's in a race car.. last time i was there there must have been 50 Atlas's in various states of build.. obviously he is able to powder coat now.. he wasn't when he did mine... but they deal with atlas's every day so you can be safe in the knowledge they know what they are doing....
