Registered Member Posts: 61 Fri, 4-Jul-2008 09:44 Apprentice mechanic	Tags : None G'morning, For the first time in four years my Manutla has failed its MOT <sob> Two things were deemed as failures..... The testers inability to push the correct fog light button ! Easily fixed with a big label saying 'REAR FOG LIGHTS' The 2nd fail point was for the emissions CO% was 4804 against a limit of 4500. The car is a V8 running twin SU's and I'm trying to avoid having to book it into a garage to get the carbs 'tweaked' to bring the reading down to a satisfactory level. Unfortunately I have no carb experience so I'm looking for some advice on which bits to adjust in what direction ..... <help !> Thanks

Registered Member Posts: 234 Fri, 4-Jul-2008 11:50	Depending on how old your carbs are, there is a fuel adjustment screw which was capped against tampering on later models as required by law, and after the carbs were set by SU before leaving the factory I guess. (May have been sealed by BL before it left the car plants) However a small screwdriver will remove this. (plead ignorance at the next test) Mark the carb body with a score line so that you can correctly reset the carb after the test and then screw the fuel adjust ment screw in a little bit (clockwise to shut off the fuel from memory), looks like just a fraction will do. Do the same to both carbs in turn. You can get a flow meter which looks a bit like a thermometer with a flexible tube attached to it (from memory) and it is relatively cheap. To make sure the carbs are set the same. Registered Member Posts: 62 Sat, 5-Jul-2008 09:04 Apprentice mechanic	Thanks for the enormous linky Major .... one half turn of the jet adjustment screw on each carb and we passed the emissions easily. Car ran like a bag of bolts on the new lean mixture but I parked around the corner and moved them both forward a 1/4 turn to see how she goes. I've marked the original position on the carb body so I'll keep turning it up until I'm happy and hopefully this will occur before I get back to the previous 'fail' point. The nice MOT man let me off with a different fog light issue though. The lights worked fine (when the correct switch was pressed ) but he commented that the bulb in the switch didn't light up so there was no warning on the dash that my fog lights were lit and technically that's a fail. Woo hoo, one year and 3 days until my next MOT Mart

Registered Member Posts: 320 Sat, 5-Jul-2008 21:38	Having seen the MOT evolve over nearly 40 years, I think it is a bit OTT these days. I always want anything unsafe to be identified, and I always want to hear about any observations of work that will need to be done to plan through the year (and I have always asked for this) - but an MOT only guarantees the safety of the vehicle for the moment of the test. How many cars do you see with only one brake light ? I bet I see one every day - its quite staggering considering most modern cars actually tell the driver one of their lights is out and they still don't fix it - they even make the bulbs easy to replace. Maybe they think that it will be fixed when the MOT comes around, so no need to bother for up to a year. IMHO some of the items are daft - what is the point of the tester having to check the font and letter spacing on the numberplate when you can screw one on especially for the test and take it off afterwards - it is hardly a safety issue. So for me I like to find a sound MOT man (preferably able to take on work as well if its serious), and let him get to know the car and me. As far as I am concerned he is there to tell me something like my brakes pipes are corroded and potentially save my life - I need to trust him to do that. When you find one you trust, then stick with them. I had one a few years ago who failed my XJS for sill corrosion - a small hole within 12 inches of a suspension mount is a failure. I cut the rust out, I rebated the metal, welded in a plate - full weld, ground smooth, filled and primed, I even injected the sill with anti-corrosion wax. When I took it back to the MOT man he accused me of simply filling the hole and covering it up - he wouldn't pass it unless I stripped the primer and filler back off so he could inspect my welding! I took it somewhere else and it passed without problems. I think you need some trust both ways. Steve There's a lot of talk these days about green transport. Registered Member Posts: 236 Sat, 5-Jul-2008 22:13	Have you come up behind someone in a modern car who don't realise they have got their rear fog lights on when there is absolutely no reason for the lights to be on at all. Those fog lights are a pain in the arse. If the MOT man was pointing out that the switch light in the cockpit wasn't functioning properly, I'd say he was doing the driver a favour. Thats my opinion. With regard to your welding exercise, all you had to do was give him a magnet, and a hammer if necessary. That would have sorted that 'Jobs worth' out. On a suspension mount, if your work had been that good, he was right to have suspicions, and you were right to feel agrieved. But he's the one with the official bit of paperwork and he saw the original job, give the bloke a chance mun. Si Via Difficilis Sit. Hanc Eligam!

I don't weld suspension mounts, or near suspension mounts, I leave heavy gauge structural welding to more experienced welders. I suggested the magnet idea to test my sill repair was metal and the MOT man wouldn't accept that.. Your beef about fog lights is to do with stupid drivers not indicator lights. The MOT test does NOT test the driver - Idiots are allowed to drive cars. I followed a car with his right turn indicator on for 30 miles on the motorway - was the tell-tale light faulty - I doubt it? I saw a car today indicate left and turn right - hardly rare. Faulty lights - no - faulty driver. Steve There's a lot of talk these days about green transport. The MOT man was trying to make it easier for the driver to remember he had switched his fog light on, or, it was on by accident. The driver is always the one at fault, the warning light is there to help. If its not working then its more of a frustration to the following driver. I'd still say the MOT man was being helpful on this count. As to the welding, not that I know much about the legality of the pass/fail thing, but if he wanted to see your work, in the raw, I guess he might have been within his rights to as, regardless of how much it might have annoyed you. I can weld as good as a proffesionaland I can also weld as bad as an DIY merchant, and if its not done for a living, then all the more reason to get it checked out.
