Registered Member Posts: 29 Tue, 19-Aug-2008 10:28	Tags : None Having ignored the V6 for some weeks, and having put it up for sale, I went to the garage to see if the car would start after all thos calm weeks. Ignition on, fuelpump was happily clicking, and I was giving the key the final twist. POW, a big fire came from under the bonnet!! Having read about several Marcos disapperaring in flames, I quickly turned off the engine (yes, it started...), and pushed the car out of the garage. Luckily, no big fire, and it stopped after a few seconds. Cause for fire is a leak in the carburators acceleration pump cover, and possibly a misfire (see earlier threads about this...). But; I was scared, and will absolutely not use the car before the carburator is given a proffesional rebuilt. Will deliver the carburator to a specialist this evening... Registered Member Posts: 1142 Tue, 19-Aug-2008 16:37 Chief mechanic	If I were you I'd also look at replacing all the fuel hoses too, I was just backing mine out of the garage a few weeks back when mrs eztop says 'what's that leaking from the back of the car ?' the small rubber hose that connects the fuel line to the tank had split, after inspection it was badly perished, so have now replaced all the fuel hoses. You are very lucky, most people only ever have one fire in a Marcos.

Registered Member Posts: 3240 Tue, 19-Aug-2008 21:18 Administrator	I burnt a hole in the boot floor carpet on the way back from Le Mans 24 hour a few years ago - again the exhausts were the culprit. It also melted a hole in the (until then rather good) tent packed immediately above it, however no fire as I don't there was any room for oxygen in the boot on that trip! I traveled a lot lighter to LMC this year - by myself & with the vast expanse of Caz's Plymouth available... The Quiffster Unregistered user?, Why not come in out of the cold? It's painless, free and opens other options up to you. Spare less than a minute of your time and register here, go on, you know it makes sense!

Does anyone know if there is a product available that will stick to the body for more than 3 sec? No holes in the body yet, but rather hot legs after even short drives :-( Is it so that these cars are prone to fire? Having read your post, and earlier radings, I'm afraid to use the car - less let it standing in the garage with the Lotuses, MG and Austin Seven.... It was stuck on using normal spray contact adhesive and it is still firmly attached after 7 years. For a belt and braces approach you could also use thermal exhaust wrap http://www.merlinmotorspo...t-Wrap/c36_256/index.html Most motorsport/kitcar part suppliers will have it.

Rubber hoses do not last forever and realising this when the fire starts is too late, and lets face it chaps it's not an expensive item to replace is it. I am also looking at trying to control some of the heat from the exhaust, the wrap stuff comes in different thicknesses so be sure you buy the good stuff, it's also available on ebay (isn't everything). Near the front I'm thinking of using some aluminium panels to keep the heat out of the foot-wells, and I'm going to fit a viscous fan to the engine to get a bit of airflow when standing. I went out in mine a few weeks back on a hot day and had to open the door when I stopped at traffic lights, I always thought people preferred Spyders because they are easier to get in to, but they are also a lot cooler

Registered Member Posts: 18 Thu, 21-Aug-2008 20:25	I don't know how effective its going to be but while I had the body off to paint it I stuck some Aluminum glass fibre matting to the underside of my car. http//www.marcos-restoration.net/pictures/mycars/marcos_painting/heat_reflective_material.jpg I stuck the stuff on with high temperature glue that is designed for car headlignings and it should be good for 120DegC.You can buy the glue and matting from http//www.woolies-trim.co.uk/ Another area you might want to modify is the electrics. If your car was made in 70's and you still have an orginal wiring loom you will find that none of the headlights or rear lights are fused. I just recently spent a day fixing a loom on a Marcos car where the insulation on the red wire had completly melted away due to a short. Registered Member Posts: 31 Fri, 22-Aug-2008 07:35	Interesting. During the last ten years (....slow progress...) I have been thru a nut-and-bolt restoration of a 1969 Lotus Europa. I fitted new loom, upgraded with thicker cables and more fuses. I'm not sure if I have the guts to start all over with the Marcos.. But an extra fuse will sure do the car good. When I resored my v6 I glued the aluminium faced insulating foil used to put behind domestic radiators to the underside of the tunnel. That makes a hell of a difference. I reckon the ally backed GRP mentioned would be even better. Martin, I wouldn't use ally plates, ally is a very good conductor of heat and will just pass it straight through.
