I was told they are Marina Mk2 on my 1990 Mantula a few weeks ago when I met with the previous owner (Pep). He told me the Marina items have a slight curve and
this has to be straightened, which is why they tend to crack in the middle.
Funny thing is I mooched around a Marina owners club site (yes !!) but they didn't look like our lenses at all. My drivers side one is cracked too, and I have been thinking about moving on to something newer. They look too much like a set of trailer lights to me, and original or not, I think they are not the prettiest aspect of the car, which is a shame as it is the last part of it most people see as we leave them standing at the lights Steve

But because of the age, time scales, the Sherpa van had a raised bulkhead type rear light fitting on the back of it. Guess what, it had the Marina Lens
attached to that as well. I used to have a spare set. But I think I gave that away as soon as the Spyder body went out the door.

try the later marina (t-reg "ish") if they are marina they will have the austin rover badge cast into the lens, otherwise they could be made by cibie
like mine check my images the reversing lights are the obvious difference- unfortunately if they are like mine I haven't a clue what the are off, maybe
after-market for trailers,camper vans etc

Yes, mine has the Austin-Rover symbol on the N/S lense. Its a 1990 car, and although factory built in 1995 it probably used the 1990 lenses.
Mark, were those lenses flat (for which you bought a whole car!), or did you have to straighten them. Every picture if a Marina I can find shows a lense quite curved around the edge of the car. Steve

Steve the early marina went round the sides .....the ones used on a mantula are from a later date marina ..i think it was a mk2 .(althought iam no marina
boffin !!!) . the ones fitted to a mantula still do not fit flush they are slightly curved in the middle so you have to over tighten them to get them to fit
flush ish .....hence cracked light !!!!

just to add to the list of possibilities....
my 1985 v6 had the ugly caravan style rear lights when i bought it, at the time that i removed them rory told me they were triumph toledo rear lights, though the person who bought them on ebay said they were dolomite units. |

mark i have NOT overtightened them thy just the drivers side just seems to have developed them, which is strange

My drivers side light is cracked too, and it seems to coincide with where the curve was taken out. I think they are heated with steam or similar to soften them
to straighten them out - that probably leaves residual stress and an inherent weakness. There is no white light showing on mine, so I seem to be OK while I
think about what to do, but I suspect I may fit some more modern lights and damn the originality.
My cars previous owner (Pep) said that they also suffered badly if you spill any petrol from the fuel filler, which runs around the boot guttering and then finds its way to the rear lights. Apparently it has a very bad effect on the plastic ! Steve

I have a set of unused (but dusty) rear light units of this type. I bought them in 1985 from the Marcos factory when I was originally buiding the car. I
decided not to use them when I noticed the curvature, thinking that would look untidy and would lead to problems in the future.
If anyone wants them, please make me a sensible offer. The soft rubber gaskets are also included. Regards Ian |
