That depends on what year your car is Paul, and also by now, many of the older V6's have had more modern 5 speed units fitted, or do you have the older 4 speed with overdrive on 3rd/4th, if his is the case the it is from one of the older 3LV6 Ford's such as a Zodiac

Paul,
Mine is a V6 with overdrive (#3m5759). The shift linkage rods are on the outside of the gearbox, one on each side of the gearbox. They have to "go around" the overdrive unit. The overdrive unit is about 4-5 inches thick (I think) and is aluminum. On the underside of the OD there should be a wire coming out of the side of a black plate about 2 inches square. That's the solenoid. I have pix of the gearbox out of the car if you want. Either email me or I can post them. Don Lattimer #3m5759 Willits, CA, USA |

...someone's removed it in all the years and owners between its construction and now.
My overdrive switch is a rocker switch on the dash! Cheers. |

Check out this site for drawings and applications of Ford gearboxes. Best one I've seen!

Adjusting the Ford V6 gearbox?? | #7 | ||
|
So . . . picking up on this thread from five years ago . . . I'm guessing that my 1969 3 Litre V6 still has the original 4-speed gearbox with overdrive
etc.
Ever since buying the car selecting reverse has always been something of an art. My trustee mechanic has previously advised that there is an adjustment screw (or similar) somewhere with which you can improve this. But where is it - and how do you get to it - from under the car or by removing the tunnel cover inside the car?? Went for a short run last weekend and got home to find absolutely no reverse and had a devil of a time "backing" into the garage! Thank goodness the Marcos is light enough to man-handle. So with a bit of direction from you guys was hoping that this weekends chore might be reinstating the reverse gear. Cheers Jeff

If you follow the link you will be able to download a scan I made from of the gearbox chapter from my Zodiac Mk4 maintenance manual. http://www.marcos-restoration.net/downloads/gearbox.pdf
If you do want to work on the gearbox linkage it is defiantly a job that needs to be done from under the car. So long as you haven't got more serious problems with the internals of you gear box you are more likely to find the problem is with worn or missing polyurethane bushes on your gear box linkage than bad adjsutment. Not sure if you will be able to get replacement bushes easily in New Zealand but it might be possible to improvise something (I used a large rubber grommet cut down to size on my gearbox to replace one that was missing when I rebuilt it. If all else failes replacment bushes are available from Marcos Heritage spare http://www.rory.uk.com/parts_now_available.htm but they are not cheap! Cheers, Adrian

Just to clarify what marcosv6 said, if the box is from a Zodiac it will have external selection rods regardles of wheather or not there is an overdrive fitted.
One rod runs down the left hand side of the box and the other is on top of the box and is the on with some adjustment on it. This will be difficult to access
from under the car. If it is a steel chassis then it won't have a removable panel in the top of the tunnel unless a previous owner has done this already. I
have and it is a great boon.
The Overdrive is as marcosv6 says bolted to the rear of the gearbox, it's 8" - 9" in diameter and about about the same in length and is made of alluminium. The prop shaft goes into the end of the overdrive, if your car doesn't have one there will be a long tapered tail housing on the back of the gear box instead. If you want one let me know, I have 2 spares which I don't need but can't bring myself to trow away |
