Thought I would do an update on the Mantis for those that may be interested in these quiet months!
Following Dave's lead I took the car to a certain establishment south of London to fit new ECU, bigger injectors, fuel pumps etc. I won't bore you with the details on why - but the car (and I) were very unhappy bunnies when it left due to their lack of understanding on these engines - they can talk-the-talk, but!!!! ETC ETC!!!
A call to Topcats Racing and Omex the ECU makers revealed that Torque of the Devil tuners -http://www.torqueofthedevil.com/default.asp - were the guys to go see - so off she went to get the mess sorted. At last, someone who understood how to fit and wire-in the ECU and map it correctly. These guys really are excellent - they do development work with Maclaren, map the Topcat Racings cars and also work with the Top Gear crowd - I recommend them to everyone.
We decided that a change of charge-cooler would be of benefit to help air-flow and temp reductions to suit the smaller charger pulley - so on went a new PWR air-to-water unit and larger Bosch pump. This fits in the position of the old Pace unit a treat and is rated to lose less than 1PSI up to 600 BHP and 20 pounds of boost. I can confirm this is a worthy upgrade - engine now runs much cooler at 15 PSI boost, although a new 2000 CFM rad fan may be helping here.
Having fixed all the mistakes made at '********' the car was re-mapped to the new upgrades and is now running like a dream - at last!!!
Engine is now running at just over 550 BHP and more importantly, 500+ lbs/ft of torque - on what T.O.T.Devil say is a very conservative rolling road!!! - so money (DON'T ASK)!!! - well spent?? LOL.
Next project is a 6 speed box - T56 Tremec unit. I have sourced these for about one third of 'normal' money in the UK -so if anyone
wants one - let me know. I will report back when it is fitted as to how it all went.
P.S. - A word to the wise - if anyone else fits a new ECU to a Mantis, make sure the guys fitting it realise that they need to open the secondary butterflies
in the inlet tract at 3200rpm with the new ECU, or - better still on a S/C setup - take them out as I did.
