Corrosion on master cylinders

Registered Member Posts: 110 Sat, 9-May-2009 06:31	Tags : None Hi, Can anybody offer any advice re "electrolytic reactions" between aluminium and steel ? I have just replaced the 3 master cylinders as the bodies have corroded and will have no place on my super shiny Marcos (when finished !) and need to make sure the new ones retain their appearance, the pedal box has just been powdercoated. If I make card gaskets to fit between the cylinders and pedal assembly box will this help and how do I insulate the bolts. Photo attached of the old ones, Regards, Martyn.......

Registered Member Posts: 15 Sat, 9-May-2009 10:17	Hi Martyn123 i think what you suggested sounds ok but i would also put some sealant in between the card to try to keep the moisture out or even use a plastic gasket. There are also some good aluminium polishes available which will put a coating over what ever it is applied to. Also try to keep the area clean and dry, brake fluid is also an "unfriendly" medium. Landrovers suffer from similar problems. It might be worth searching through Landrover pages for more help.

Registered Member Posts: 110 Sat, 9-May-2009 16:30	martin because they are ally you can take them of remove all the seals have the dip cleaned and powder coated or anodised in a colour there is a company called jackson plateing in feltham midds we use they are reasonable and do a good job rgds hydraulic1

Sounds like the paper joint is a good step, but as suggested make it water proof with silicon. my experience is with stainless steel and mild steel in sea water. These metals are kept from contacting each other by using joints made of reinforced resin, bolts are fitted with sleeves / tubes made of same material so they don't start corrosion in bolt holes. Adjacent bare metals are painted. However I guess the master cylinder bodies will tarnish due to the elements so best try painting/plating as previously mentioned or oiling with WD40 regularly.
