I had a diode protected Bosch fuel relay go on my XJS (fortunately in the drive). It wasn't cheap - it was a little grey square box and I think a red cross mark on it indicated it was diode protected (but that was on a much older car .. 1985). I often wondered if it was a victim of s stray welding current spike - though it's failure didn't coincide. But I understand that breakdown of a solid-state circuit can occur quite a while later.
