Greetings Chaps,
Some clarification.
1 - Replacing the calipers made the difference. I didn't attempt to strip these down as they were exchange units but the source of the problem was evidently the handbrake/piston mechanism. I don't understand how the piston worked so well on the footbrake but not on the handbrake. Something seized somewhere, but it doesn't matter it is the outcome that's important.
2 - Nothing modified or replaced on the handbrake lever, again it works now. I can see how a different angle helps the ergonomics but care is needed in creating extra leverage so that forces are within the limits of the mount and chassis.
3 - The cable needed stripping down, freeing of corrosion and lubricating so that it worked efficiently - helped but was not the source of the problem.
4 - Changing the brake fluid didn't improve the handbrake (how could it?) just a sensible thing to do at the time.
