I did another 2 hours today | #23

Slight change today. Yesterday I broke my pane of glass. Its hard work laying up grp without a sheet of glass. I have broke many, so yesterday I went that extra mile and bought wire impregnated glass, clear finish. Two sizes one large and the other not so large. The woman at Thatcham Glass was a bit bemused when I asked for to bits about this size, gesturing with my hands. Bless her she did her best, I paid up and we was both happy. So last night in the wee small hours whilst you lot were all tucked up in bed, during my lunch break, I made the mounting boards to put the glass sheets on to give them added protection against me, in the garage.
So while I wait for my new NBC type boiler suit, waterproof, vinyl, lined, elasticated cuffs, hood drawstring, zipper up front, with the all important popper flap to cover the zip, which I didn't use on Tuesday and got resin soaked into the zip. You try getting out of a set of overalls when the zip is glued shut and half way up your chest. Another 30 and I will be starting to work on rubbing down with gusto, probably on Friday afternoon when I get out of bed. Today, infact in about 30 mins I am going to lay up some big sheets of grp on my new glass and start making the replacement pieces for the wooden plywood panels that support the dashboard. Mine are falling away, most were never bonded in. At least with the GRP I get a chance to build in some tidier features. We'll see how far we get. Might not be many pictures today on picasa, but we will see. Later dudes. Si Via Dificlis Sit. Hanc Eligam!

That's my car that the link to Rory's site on your first post points to! It's also my car at the top of the Mantula page on this site, so before and after modifications... Be very aware MajorB that costs can run away so far that you won't believe it... I am fast heading toward 80 grand or so, sometimes it's better not to think about that...
The whopping great bonnet bulge, although slightly larger than it needs to be, is so that I can fit an ACT carbon twin plenum and twin Jenvey throttle bodies underneath. If/when I have the car resprayed, I will have the bulge reduced as much as possible, it's a bit lairy really. But I would love the 4200cc engine in there from my Maserati, that would be a quick car! Performance per pound, nothing can compare to a small block Chevy. However, I wanted the strongest N/A Rover engine I could get and I probably have it now. If our cars were all the same, we'd be like Porsche owners! I can't see the project pics, is the site down or something? |

Hello SpyderV8.
Thanks for the addition. Please do not take any offence by me using your cars photo. In absolutely no way was I criticizing your car. I was merely saying what I didn't want on mine. This will not be the first time I have built this car. Over the years I have spent more money, shed more blood, sweat more sweat, and cried more tears on this car than any other I have owned. I know how easy it is to rack up a huge bill. I have a folder here logging every penny I spend on it, right down to things like the latex gloves, overalls, etc. We have a financial plan in place. If the money runs out during this spend period, then I have to wait till the next period comes around, (which wont be to long in arriving. I don't know why you have spent 80k on a Mantula for, but it sounds like you are as crackers as I am. . As an engineer I am hoping that by doing most of the donkey work myself, I will save a whole heap of money and get the pleasure of seeing the job come together at close quarters. I have stacks of drawings, sketches and more drawings and sketches modified as I work out different ideas before putting them into place seeing the ideas come to life, this is proving very satisfying once again. For example turning out a bespoke cable loom is pretty much straight forward as far as I am concerned, it wont be the first time I have made one for a Marcos. Being multi skilled allows me to tackle more jobs with confidence. Other owners might be forced to buy in the sort of skills I have. Last night for example, I was fault finding a plc controlled machine, welding a guide rail back into position and fitting new belts to a conveyor, all in a days work. The only thing I do not have, is an abundance of, time, and that as they say, is priceless. However some jobs like the chassis tuning, and paint work, for example, are best left to those that do that sort of thing as a daily job. I know my limitations. At the end of the day, I am hoping to achieve something a little different in this Mantula category. The choices are all mine. The obstacles I end up creating as a result will be the challenges I over come. I want this car back on the road, and I am finding this forum the ideal vehicle to move the project forward. This week for example I have put in more hours on the car than I have in any other similar period over the last 8 years. By creating this running blog type thing it means I have to carry on. So follow the progress and enjoy. Please feel free to criticize or put forward any constructive comments, I will take it on board. I don't particularly want to re invent the wheel, (but sometimes it may be neccessary.) This posting was only supposed to be a few words long. Its turned into a bit of a ramble, hey ho. Must be the week of nights coming to an end. Have fun. Si Via Dificlis Sit. Hanc Eligam!

Major B, I have been following your exploits and eagerly await your latest pictures of progress. I admire you enthusiasm and skills concerning the rebuild of the Marcos.
Myself, I have done nothing to mine, not driven it for 15 months or worked on it for 10 months due to work commitments. However, that has changed and work has started on the car again where it finished in Jan 2007. Not as much work to do as yourself, but more than enough to keep me busy for the next 4 months in the free time that I do have. Hopefully, I will be out on track again towards the middle of 2008 with a sharper and lighter car. |

The fact that I have no mechanical skills and work away from the UK most of the time means I have had to pay for everything to be done on the car - and that's what's killed me really, about a 1/3 of the cost is labour!!! I envy your skills and knowledge, and the fact that you have time to use them!
There are many things that have been fabricated and then dumped, perfectly good interiors and dashboards taken out and changed for something slightly different, painting and repainting, wheels and yet more wheels, and of course the engine - The beating heart of any car, however mine was a cholesterol choked, triple-bypassed bodge job that I am now running close to 20k for with trying for YEARS to sort it out. But it's my car, it's taken an awful lot of my money and I will never sell it dp, I nearly bought a 993/911 a couple of weeks ago but the chap had parked a Maserati next to it... one 140mph test drive later |

See, I said you was crackers.
Just like me And similarly, I will never get rid of this pile of bits either. Thats why I have hung onto it for so long. There are many reasons why its taken as long as it has. The biggest is enthusiasm. Or the lack of it. Currently I am riding a crest of a wave. Moved along by events. For example, the engine man phoned last night, he's back in the country. I have phoned my chassis man, (and fellow lunatic) he's coming with me to pick up the LS1 next weekend. That means my single garage has to have another sort out so I can get everything in. Through, and out the back. I also have to repair the daughters car, which I kerbsided last night and wrecked the passenger front suspension. Off to do that in a minute. My skills are mainly electrical. I have had to be very practical all my life. Engineering of all forms has been the mainstay of my adult life. Trying to put this Marcos back together will test things to the limit. However its the paintwork and the interior finish which I will be judged on. That is all most people will ever see. Those two things are skills I lack and will rely on others to complete. SpyderV8, I do like some of the other bonnet features on your Mantula, . The added lights for example, they look neat. So to does the extra louvres. Even if these were standard Mantula's factory finished, none would be the same. Thats what makes Marcos special. Enjoy. Si Via Dificlis Sit. Hanc Eligam!

Before you run TreVoR down too much, for my money their home-built V12 was the finest engine I have ever heard. It was 860bhp with British GT restrictors and the sound was awesome. I watched it race and heard it in the pits at Oulton Park and I will never be the same again ... and I miss it (sob) - however the Rover and the Chevy are a lot easier as regards spares and tuning parts - so have to be practical......but the @#%$ V12 was several years ago and I still need therapy !

After Friday nights impact with a kerbstone, yesterday was spent, in the rain, rebuilding the suspension on the daughters Pug 206. All went very well, but once we drove it last night it was obvious that the whole lot has to come apart again as I seem to have damaged the outboard CV joint, as it grinds a bit when you turn right, just as I was doing when I went into the kerb sideways
So today its out to get a new CV joint, try and get the rim and tyre sorted or that will happen tomorrow if everywhere is shut today. Then tomorrow its Gym, CV joint repair, 1 to 2 hours on the Marcos and then work. I was up early this morning, sketch pad in hand, doodling down an idea which might bear fruit as an overhead console for the CD type player speakers and interior lights. What I want to know, has anyone got one, had one made? If so what does it look like? I have also had another rush of creative juices and thought it might be nice to recess the rear square number plate. This would mean I could hide the number plate lights in the moulding, make them LED and it would look pretty cool. The mold would be one of the easier ones I have made. Also it would add even more strength to the rear most wall of the Marcos, IE the rear light cluster wall. I guess it will take so measuring first to see if I got room. I will try and get an hour in this afternoon, but we are due to be busy, so any photo's will probably go on the picture gallery tomorrow. More soon. Have a nice day yaul! 18/11/2007 Another bit done.. | #35

Not many more bits to do now,
Only joking, I am trying not to think of how many bits I have actually got to do...... A bit more tidying up on the passenger under wheel arch area. And the drivers door. This door looks like its been through the mill at some point in the dim and distant past. Anyway its starting to look a lot better now. picasaweb.google.com/tvmarcos look for the rebuild folder 18/11/2007 thats the most recent. I am just editing it now. Its amazing what can be done with a 4 or 5 inch angle grinder. Perhaps even one in each hand

A certain Marcos designer (changed for political correctness)may have been reputed to have said.:
(ooh eer dodgey ground now Bloodnock) ''You can only see one side of the car at a time''. (or words to that effect) This was in answer so I am told to the question as to why the door windows are a different size. Whats this got to do with door fit and use. Well its my fall back option when it all goes tits up. I know all about the door fits and the way they didn't. The gaps, the sloping body, etc. Sheesh I have been digging the depths with Marcos since the early 90's. The doors will fit (Alright dear I am coming to bed, grrrr) They will open the correct way, and they will have one of the proper door locks that Marcos used to lock them. Open them, mmm. Don't drink Cabinet Sauvignionion and then try typing this nonsense.... Where is my glasses gone? Si Via Dificilis Sit. Hanc Eligam!

It may be a crime to say such a thing on here, but I think if T*R has put the Chevy small block in the Tuscan, I would still have mine, or would have traded up. They would also still be in business! Sagaris + 440bhp Chevy V8 = mine
It's a great engine, I hope the Mantula chassis is up to the job... The brakes certainly won't be, and nor will the suspension arms and wishbones! Need to get those changed out for Mantara/Lm type, not the pressed steel nonsense we have. |
