Registered Member Posts: 219 Sat, 30-May-2009 17:06 Apprentice mechanic	Tags : None I had a whine from my Mantula's rear nearside wheel and ordered a new wheel bearing from Rory. The local garage fitted it about a month ago and no more whining. However, when I had it MOT'd today (at the same garage, by the same mechanic) there was oil seeping out of the drum. He reckoned that the oil seal has gone, but I have checked my exploded view of the axle in my Haynes book and it doesn't show any seals, only one between the diff and the propshaft. Mind you, my Haynes is for a Mk 1Capri and I have a Mk2 capri axle. I reckon it was down to something he has (or has not) done, although it was only a bearing change. I took the drum off today and it is definitely hypoy oil and it's all over the inside of the drum Comments appreciated

Registered Member Posts: 220 Sun, 31-May-2009 10:42 Apprentice mechanic	Hi Steve, Could be. I spoke to Mick Andrews yesterday and he reckons that this can happen when a new bearing is fitted. The oil seeps between the housing and the bearing. He said that a quick smear of instant gasket such as Hermatite would do the trick. Sounds resonable and if anyone would know, Mick would, he's dismantled more Marcoses than I've had hot dinners! Registered Member Posts: 903 Thu, 25-Jun-2009 16:22 Chief mechanic	Did you get it sorted? I have had the same problem and in my case it is due to oil seeping between the shaft and the bearing rather than the bearing and housing. My shaft has a slight flat for some reason and I have to apply mastic befor fitting nthe bearing. Took me ages to find what the problem was.

It said in the Haynes manual that when topping up the diff, leave the level plug out for five minutes to allow the excess oil to seep out, otherwise it will seep through the bearing. I asked the mechanice how long he left the plug out and he said he put it in straight away, so it was down to him! That said, when I washed the car a week later, I noticed that the magnetic cover to the front locking wheel nut was missing. I reckon he lost the one to the rear and replaced it with the front one to cover himself, but I can't prove it. Any ideas where I can get a new set?
