Registered Member Posts: 19 Tue, 14-Jul-2009 07:44	Tags : None After all the trouble of finding the short circuit that kept my Mantis off the road for 2 weeks, I am now facing the next challenge.... Upto 4000 rpm, the engine is just fine. Usual torque, just perfect. But when all hell ought to break loose (at 4000 rpm) the engine starts stuttering, misfiring and looses all power. My first guess was that there was a problem in the fuel supply. So I connected a pressure gauge to the valve on the fuel line (with a 2 meter tube ) The tricky part was to read the gauge while accellerating Anyway: 40 psi all the way, even when I hit the dreaded 4000 rpm stutter.... Anybody know what I can still check ? Which sensor, which vacuum line, which magic piece of cabling ? I really wouldn't want to come all the way to the 50th anniversary with max 4000 rpm

Is the ECU recognising this? The Quiffster Unregistered user?, Why not come in out of the cold? It's painless, free and opens other options up to you. Spare less than a minute of your time and register here, go on, you know it makes sense!

Is the ECU recognising this? The ECU on a cobra engine opens (or should do)!!! the IMRC (secondary butterflies in the inlet tract ) at 3200 RPM. This can be checked by looking at the (IMRC) shaft end-plates that are located at the rear of the engine - just look to see if they both rotate at 3200 RPM. The 'missing' problem may be being caused by one or both coils packs breaking down at higher revs - been there myself and replaced them with Accel units from Summit Racing - although I think Gary posted a thread for getting MSD ones in the UK not long ago??? Registered Member Posts: 20 Wed, 22-Jul-2009 10:45	Looked at the IMRC Both open nicely @ around 3500-4000 rpm (difficult to watch the rev counter and the valves at the same time ) Then I tried something different. I squeezed the return fuel line while revving the engine..... no more misfiring I just can't understand why I didn't see a problem on the fuel pressure, while artificially increasing the fuel pressure would solve the problem. Obviously, I can only do this with the car standing still, but should I not just replace both fuel filters, the fuel pump and the pressure regulator,...just to make sure ?

Registered Member Posts: 700 Thu, 23-Jul-2009 12:16 Chief mechanic	Replace the pressure regulator first, by squeezing the return pipe you are doing the job of the regulator. The fuel filters have to be really badly blocked to reduce the fuel pressure to the injector rails, but still a good idea to change them if they haven`t been done for a couple of years. It`s not more power you need, it`s less weight and a few subtle mods and some not so subtle!

I also replaced part of some seriously squeezed rubber fuel lines (in the boot) by some copper tubing (less prone to flattening) I still enjoy the fantastic "unleaded" taste in my mounth from trying to siphon out all remaining fuel in the tank. Over the weekend, I will dismantle and inspect/clean the fuel pump and fuel filters, just to make sure. I'm also wondering if removing the cats has not screwed up the fuel/air mixture. Therefore, what I REALLY would like to do is to check out this famous ECU. (and read some of the error message) Does anybody know where the connector(s) are located ? In 2004 I had a Tornado chip fitted by RPI engineering (along with la few otherr things) and my car was working beautifully. In 2005, just prior to leaving for Le Mans I had the cats removed. I learned that there isa tune resistor that should also be to be replaced (there are two versions of tune resistor, one with Green wires and one with White). On my car, these are located next to the ECU under the dashboard. I was advised that changing the tune resistor was not strictly necessary and as time was short leading to my trip to Le Mans, I didn't change it. For the first week, everything was fine, although the engine did pop and bang on deceleration, which sounded quite nice. After the first week, my car kept breaking down. It would only drive for a few miles before coming to a halt and I had to wait 20-30 minutes before it would re-start and the whole procedure would be repeated. When we got back to England, I fitted new relays, a new fuel pressure regulator all to no avail. I got the correct tune resistor, still no joy, so I took out the Tornado chip and replaced it with my original one, from that point on all has been well. I can only surmise that running the car with no cats and the wrong tune resistor buggered up the fuel mapping and eventually killed the ECU chip, so if you haven't already CHANGE THE TUNE RESISTOR!

Registered Member Posts: 48 Sun, 9-Aug-2009 20:28	Sounds like the small cone filter in the fuel pump intake tube is blocked.Sometimes dirt gets past the pre filter and blocks up this filter, this filter can not be seen,so crimp off the main feed to the pre filter and take off the hose into the pump,you can hook the filter out with a very small plain screwdriver.The filter is approx 9mm in dia and 15mm long.Clean the filter out and refit.

But the cherry on the cake was presented to me by Dave Chivers. He listened to my stuttering engine, walked to his car, found a replacement air mass flow meter in his boot, fitted it on my engine and HURRAAAAYYYY !!!!! Many thanks again, Dave. You really made me a very happy man ! The drive back to Belgium was fabulous. From the Dartford bridge to the Chunnel in just under 30 minutes....
