Has anyone replaced / upgraded their Laserline 996 Imobiliser? and if so for what model?
Having compared notes with a few others at Prescott yesterday and checked the manual I suspect mine is due for retirement.
The 996 has 2 security systems that can inhibit the fuel relays and starter solenoid and I suspect mine has an intermittent fault on both.
On the way to Prescott yesterday I 'm pretty sure it was the starter solenoid inhibiter that kicked in when I stopped the at the Shell Garage at Hammersmith flyover- which meant I'd to wait 10 mins before it would "release" the car again (everything else but the starter including the voltmeter worked fine). But from there on out all the way to Prescott a fuel relay cut out kicked in whenever I got to 3000 revs. Symptoms were cleared immediately if I let the revs fall to tickover and then the engine worked perfectly - as long as I stayed under 3000 revs.
I had thoughts yesterday of taking it in to get the engine mapping and fuel pressure checked when something strange happened on the way home last night . After I stopped for fuel near Reading the 3000 rev limiter was gone and the car worked perfectly for the rest of the way home (50 miles)..........pure unlimited growling, howling bliss all the way up the rev range.
I thought it might be dependent on weight of fuel in the tank but there were no hints of the rev limiter kicking in even after 50 miles
So I reckon the 996 should be retired at the first available opportunity, just not quite sure what model to replace it with yet.
I will talk to Laserline about their lifetime guarantee next week........
