Putting your head in a gas oven is far less effective since natural gas came in - in the 1970s. The old gas would put you to sleep (for good), the new gas tends to make you gasp for air.

As regards data recovery, a lot depends on how badly things have gone wrong. If a disk has had a mechanical failure then it is pretty final for all your data. If it is a logical screw-up due to virus or other rogue program, then the data may still be there and a new install WITHOUT re-formatting may gain you access to you data - or try mounting it as a slave drive in a different computer (you might need to move the odd jumper around to make it a slave, but that is normally marked on the box!)

In general I would recommend everyone has more than one hard disk (as they are cheap as chips), and keeps disk-to-disk copies of their data.
